Families with boys (1st-5th graders) who may be interested in Cub Scouting.

Cub Scouting is a program that promotes character building, citizenship training, fitness, and just plain fun for first through fifth grade boys.  Pack and Troop 58 are sponsored by the Konko Church of San Francisco which was founded  in 1939.   Den meetings are held at the Konko Church on scheduled Friday evenings from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, unless field trips are planned.  Scouting is a family program. You and your son work together in planning, developing, and participating in fun-filled activities and events.  Pack 58 Den Leaders are tremendous resources of this organization who are dedicated to preparing active and enriching programs for the scouts.

Families with boys (6th-12th grades) who may be interested in Boy Scouting.

Comments from past and present scouts and their families.

  Scouts:

Fun, new friends with common goals, learn skills, advance thru each Scout rank, earn beads, pins, badges, & patches throughout the year.  Enjoy the outings, especially the family camp outs & camp fires, the pinewood derby, the snacks at the end of meetings, and the Awards Nights.

As we got to be the "older scouts" we enjoyed the responsibility for self & patrol, learning to be independent, learning outdoor skills, team games & doing your best at skills contests & instructions  ( athletic relays, compass, knots, first aid, swimming, life saving, wilderness survival, rifle, archery, shotgun, fire starting, cooking, fishing, boating, skits, insect collecting, reptile & mammals, knife & ax safety, wood carving, etc. )

Those of us who reached the peak of EAGLE SCOUT, rate the Sierra backpacking hikes as the top activity, and the lasting friendships & memories as the top benefit of the Scouting program.

  Parents:

Opportunity to meet & befriend new families that tend to hold strong family values, experiencing varied activities with our son & other families we never would have on our own, improves family togetherness & unity.

Adult leaders all expressed appreciation to be able to do so much with their sons & the other Scouts, because the time from 7 to 18 goes so fast, & by the late teens the boys follow the normal growth pattern of doing less with their family & more with their peers.

What parents enjoy about the experience with their sons:

Seeing sons experiencing & learning from other boys & adults, getting constant recognition (pins, badges, & patches from age 7 to 18) for his achievements, learning & practicing outdoor & leadership skills, learning to work in a team environment, seeing them experience a world away from TV & Videos (hiking, camping, crafts, fishing, boating, horsemanship, pioneering, orienteering, archery, rifle, cooking, cleaning, carving, service to others in need, wilderness survival, first aid, swimming, life saving, citizenship, etc.) . Seeing the enhancing of physical & moral self, the increased respect & appreciation of the environment & their community.  Scouting promotes leadership, confidence, sense of duty, respect, & self-esteem, helps over come some of the void of growing up in single parent home.  Webelos pins & Scout merit badges program gives the boys introductions to different skills & careers. If they stay with the program & attain the Eagle rank, it helps distinguish them from other students competing to get into their college of choice.
